Di use Galactic Gamma - Ray Continuum
نویسندگان
چکیده
Coordinated observations of the galactic center region using the imaging SIGMA instrument and the high-sensitivity OSSE instrument were performed to separate the compact source contributions from the di use component. The resulting compact-source corrected spectrum of the galactic center region is found to be similar in both intensity and spectral index to the spectra obtained from OSSE observations of the galactic plane at l = 25 and 339 , suggesting that the spatial distribution of the emission is broad and nearly at in galactic longitude. At energies below 100 keV, the observed spectrum is found to be softer and more intense than predicted by theoretical models. The observed low energy continuum may be either di use in origin, or due to unresolved X-ray sources below the SIGMA detection threshold.

HIGH LATITUDE GAMMA RAYS ASSOCIATED WITH VIRGO
A more detailed analysis is made of the energy spectrum of the diffuse component of extragalactic gamma rays over the range of 0.3- 10 GeV, obtained fromthe EGRET instrument at the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The derived excess energy spectrum of high galactic latitude, b > 60°, using intercept method shows that it is correlated with Virgo cluster (over lsr) and average Virgo intensity i...
متن کاملPositron Annihilations at the Galactic Center: Generating More Questions Than Answers
The bulge of our Galaxy is illuminated by the 0.511 MeV gamma-ray line flux from annihilations of nonrelativistic positrons. The emission is strongly concentrated at the Galactic Center (GC), in contrast to gamma-ray maps tracing nucleosynthesis (e.g., the 1.809 MeV line from decaying Al) or cosmic ray processes (e.g., the 1–30 MeV continuum), which reveal a bright disk with a much less promine...
متن کاملGamma-ray Burst Energy Spectra: Theoretical Models, Old and New
The modelling of gamma-ray burst (GRB) spectra has considerable potential for increasing the understanding of these enigmatic sources. A diversity of ideas and analyses has been generated over the last two decades to explain line features and continuum shapes, encompassing both older galactic neutron star and \new age" cosmological source models. This paper reviews some of the highlights of the...
متن کاملLetter to the Editor γ-ray evidence for galactic in-situ electron acceleration
Evidence for the possible existence of a strong flux of low-energy (< 10 MeV) cosmic ray electrons in the Galaxy has been recently established by GINGA, OSSE and COMPTEL observations of the diffuse galactic gamma ray continuum emission down to photon energies below 50 keV. We explain the implied presence of many low-energy cosmic ray electrons with the existence of interstellar in-situ reaccele...
متن کاملDiffuse Emission from the Galactic Plane and Unidentified EGRET Sources
Diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission is produced in interactions of cosmic rays with gas and ambient photon fields and thus provides us with an indirect measurement of cosmic rays in various locations in the Galaxy. The diffuse gamma-ray continuum is more intense than expected both at energies below 200 keV and above 1 GeV. The existing models for the high-energy excess are reviewed in the light...
